Tampa’s New 'Crypto Experience Center' a Big Part of Regional Rebrand: Officials

Florida continues to garner attention from the fintech community as Tampa added a first-of-its-kind “Crypto Experience Center” (CEC) to its list of regional attractions.

CoinFlip, which opened the center to the public Wednesday, September 14, also unveiled a separate engineering hub and corporate office at the city’s Sparkman Wharf, according to an announcement. The CEC will allow individuals to “explore the world of cryptocurrency,” meet with crypto guides who can help users make over-the-counter trades and interact with Bitcoin ATMs. CoinFlip will also offer no-cost workshops, events and one-on-one appointments at the new location.

“Bringing to life this customer-facing experience is one of many groundbreaking moves on the horizon for CoinFlip,” said the company’s CEO and co-founder Ben Weiss. “As the market continues to grow and use cases for cryptocurrency expand, the need for education and guidance is critical to the advancement of the industry and we look forward to driving that momentum.”

On hand for last week’s ribbon-cutting celebration were Weiss, Tampa’s Mayor Jane Castor, CoinFlip CTO Rory Herriman and Tampa Bay Economic Development Council President and CEO Craig Richard, among others. “We are thrilled to officially welcome CoinFlip to Tampa and celebrate the grand opening of the Crypto Experience Center. Innovation has been a key pillar for our city and opportunities are endless for businesses that want to call Tampa home,” Castor said. “We look forward to supporting CoinFlip and its educational initiatives for our community, further demonstrating Tampa’s status as a hub for technology.”

According to the Tampa Bay Economic Development Council, the new office space represents an important part of a developing 56-acre “live-work-play” neighborhood known as Water Street Tampa, credited with helping to transform the downtown Tampa area. All told, the center and its associated locations are expected to bring in more than 40 new jobs.

CoinFlip, which is headquartered in Chicago, was recently named the fastest growing company in the city by Crain’s Chicago Business and has enjoyed success to the tune of just under $100 million in revenue last year. “The CoinFlip team did not take the decision lightly in choosing a location for the company’s first corporate expansion. After consulting with the team at the Tampa Bay Economic Development Council, the team is extremely excited by its decision to plant seeds in Tampa,” said Herriman, who lives in Tampa. “The city’s potential as an emerging tech and crypto community is endless, and we’re driven to further this potential by bringing crypto innovation directly to the Sparkman Wharf.”
